Janice Block is an executive vice president and the Chief Legal and Administrative Officer, at Kaplan Inc., a global education company owned by The Graham Holdings Company. With nearly 400 locations in more than 30 countries and more than 24,000 employees worldwide, Kaplan educates more than one million students and professionals each year. Janice has been with Kaplan since 2006, starting as the general counsel and chief compliance officer for Kaplan’s Higher Education division and then assuming those same roles for the Kaplan parent company in 2011. As Kaplan Inc.’s Chief Legal and Administrative Officer, Janice leads a worldwide team of legal, regulatory, compliance, government relations, human resources and talent development professionals, supporting all facets of Kaplan’s business.  She also serves on the board of directors and as an officer of numerous Kaplan entities in the U.S. and overseas.

Prior to joining Kaplan, Janice was the general counsel and corporate secretary for Career Education Corporation.  She also spent nearly five years as a regional counsel for Microsoft Corporation. Janice’s legal career also includes serving as a partner in the Chicago offices of Greenberg Traurig and a DLA Piper predecessor firm, and as an attorney at Seyfarth Shaw and Kirkland & Ellis.

During each of the past three years, Janice was selected as a “Top General Counsel” by the First Chair organization, and her Kaplan legal department won First Chair’s “Top U.S. Law Department” in 2011. She has been named a “Top 40 Attorney Under 40” in Illinois Law Bulletin and a “top Illinois lawyer” for many years in Chicago magazine. Her commitment to innovation and teamwork in the law has been featured in profiles on her in the U.K. edition of Practical Law magazine, and in The National Law Journal, Inside Counsel magazine, First Chair magazine, and the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin. Janice is a frequent speaker and writer on the topics of talent development and leadership, and was a columnist for many years for Inside Counsel magazine. She is a member of The Chicago Network, the Princeton Clubs of Chicago and New York, and Global Leaders in Law. Janice also serves on the advisory board of the Center for Women in Law’s 2015 Law & Leadership Summit at The University of Texas Law School in Austin. In 2014 Janice received the Anti-Defamation League’s “Woman of Achievement” award.

Janice earned her bachelor’s degree magna cum laude from Princeton, her M.S. degree in journalism from Northwestern, and her J.D. degree from Columbia. Janice also has completed mini-MBA programs at Oxford University and Harvard Business School through Global Leaders In Law.

Janice is married to Ron Chaddock and is the mother of three children: Sara (24), Alex (22), and Francesca (16). She spends the majority of her free time in ice rinks, enthusiastically watching her husband play hockey, her youngest daughter compete in figure skating, and rooting for the Chicago Blackhawks.
